herbaliser band session one Malgré le manque d'épaisseur de notre récente chronique de l'album du duo The Herbaliser et de leurs amis rappeurs, nous n'en étions pas restés là. Leur herbier hip hop miraculeux aurait mérité plus de lignes élogieuses, c'est vrai. Néanmoins «Very Mercenary» mérite sa note (maximale) tellement nous y sommes revenus sans cesse depuis, tellement nous avons pu le jouer en soirées ou chez des amis: «Comment ça tu ne connais pas le dernier Herbaliser? Il est mortel, colles-en un pendant que je te met ça...» Et hop c'était parti pour une heure de bonheur hip autant que hop. Seulement être expert en sampleurs, scratcher comme un Invisbl Scratch Pickl, fabriquer des boucles imparables et y intégrer des rappeurs de choix, c'est une chose, mais transposer tout ça sur scène alors que les rappeurs en question poursuivent leur carrière de leur côté en est une autre. C'est pourquoi les Herbaliser partirent en tournée avec leur groupe: Jack Wherry à la basse et Dj Ollie Teeba aux platines, bien sûr (The Herbaliser, c'est eux), mais aussi Mickey Moody à la batterie, Chris Bowden au sax alto, Matt Coleman au trombone, Patrick Dawes aux percus, Andy Ross à la flûte et aux saxs ténor et bariton, Kaidi Tatham aux claviers (clavinet et Fender Rhodes inclus), et enfin Ralph Lamb à la trompette! Avec tous ces acolytes, notre duo devenait un véritable groupe: The Herbaliser Band. Travaillant de nouvelles sonorités avec toute cette troupe, et jonglant d'improvisations en expérimentations live sur la base des instrumentaux de leurs morceaux, la sauce allait évoluer et muter au-delà du cadre du hip hop, en des compos pour big band. C'est ce que vous retrouverez ici, enregistré en deux jours de studio, représentatif du son «live» du groupe. Disponible en CD ou dans une excellente version 2x10" (en vinyle: toujours excellent par rapport au CD...), mais finalement sorti sur le petit label Department H, avec plein de remerciements à Ninja Tune, ce petit bijou de jazz funk breakbeat live ne restera pas longtemps dans les bacs: jetez-vous dessus!
