Les mauvaises langues diront que Garcia ne prenait pas de trips qu'avec le Dead (ce sont toujours ceux qui parlent le plus qui écoutent le moins). Peu importe la substance tant qu'on a l'ivresse… musicale. (Tant qu'il y a une substance autant qu'elle soit psychédélique). B3, Rhodes basse, batterie et guitare sur un mode jazz-funk jammé et inspiré c'est tout ce qu'il y a à savoir, ou presque. C'est en 68-69 (Garcia ne se rappellait pas bien) qu'Howard Wales fit se rencontrer John Kahn et notre écervelé préféré. Ce fut le début d'une longue et profonde complicité (Jerry Garcia Band, Almost Acoustic…) jusqu'à la mort, John Kahn meurt une semaine après son complice. Et c'est au Matrix, entre 68 et 72 que Jerry venait respirer, partager son amour pour le jazz et la libre expression en la compagnie de l'obscur Wales, clavier surdoué, téméraire et funky aux enseignements précieux à l'évolution de la musique du Dead pour la décennie à venir. Il se retira en 72, en suggérant à Garcia, Kahn et Vitt un organniste pour le remplacer : Merl Saunders! The rest is history : Keystones, Legion Of Mary, Reconstruction… Un album studio instrumental, "Hooteroll?" est sorti à l'époque (1971, le premier hors Grateful Dead), excellent quoi que sommairement construit, avec Martin Fierro (sax, flute, co-auteur), membre actuel de Zero. Bref ça fait 30 ans que ceux qui connaissent salivent à l'idée de la version live de cette collaboration : la voilà, arrètez de baver maintenant! Ça colle partout et on vous regarde, vous êtes dans le métro, vos doigts déchirent fébrilement le plastique d'emballage du bijou en question, fièrement acheté chez votre disquaire… Euh… Et oui! En plus d'être tout d'abord disponible uniquement sur le net sous 15 jours, le disque en question se trouve maintenant en import un peu partout. À 12$ sur le dead.net… et 2 semaines de sauvages salivages intempestifs! Rien que pour le tease de "The other one" sur "Venutian blues" ça vaut le coup!
