Imaginez-vous d'un seul coup projeté sur un campus américain, en plein milieu d'un concert gratuit donné par un groupe de zicos de la Syracuse University, pleins d'énergie et sans aucune prétention, juste là pour faire danser l'auditoire... Vous visualisez? A peine la musique commence-t-elle que déjà vos pieds battent le rythme, vos mains aussi d'ailleurs, et tout votre corps se met à gigoter... C'est irrésistible. Le premier album live du jeune groupe d'Atlanta formé en 1995 par deux amis d'enfance (Erik Rowen aux lead vocals et à la guitare, et Andrew Margolius à l'accordéon, l'harmonica et au chant) donne un excellent aperçu de la spontanéité, du talent et de l'enthousiasme des petits jeunes de Soup, qui compte également Bram Bessoff (batterie, percussions et chant), Kevin Crow (lead guitar, chant) et Lee Adkins (basse). Si je devais résumer Soup en une seule phrase, ce serait: "groupe de fac qui a réussi". Mais attention, rien de péjoratif là-dedans! Musicalement, ils assurent tous: enragés (déjà plus de cinq cent shows à leur actif...), originaux (l'accordéon est très présent sur tous les titres) et eccléctiques (leur musique incorpore aussi bien du funk, du jazz que du bluegrass, du zydeco ou même du hip-hop). Le CD "A Tour Of Two Cities" contient deux concerts, celui du 24 Septembre 1999 au Cotton Club d'Atlanta (chez eux, donc) et celui du 2 Octobre 1999 au Wetlands, New York. Tout aussi jubilatoires l'un que l'autre, ma préférence va toutefois au premier, peut-être meilleur parce que justement ils étaient chez eux, je ne sais pas. "Squirrels", "Salley's Sister" ont vraiment la pêche et sont une bonne introduction au reste du concert, tandis que "Cybil Rivalry", presque progressif avec son changement de rythme imprévisible , illustre bien l'humour du groupe et ses références variées. Autre moment fort: "Get Me Some Action", enchaîné à "Need A Little Bit", laisse la part belle aux quatre chanteurs du groupe, alternativement ou à l'unisson. Et "Dear Prudence", reprise des Beatles, toute en finesse et en douceur, conclut le concert à merveille, et permet de se reposer un peu avant d'attaquer la suite. Le second CD contient également de bon instants, comme "Marvin Wright", avec son solo de guitare acoustique époustouflant, ou "Eweh". Mais le meilleur est en fait pour la fin, avec "Breakdown", très funky avec une basse groovy à souhait, et "Leisure Suit", où la foule se déchaîne avec eux. Soup finit son concert avec un "Bid You Goodnight" gratefuldeadien très émouvant quoique assez énergique (comme le reste). Viennent ensuite les rappels, parmi lesquels le "Tangled Up In Blue" de Bob Dylan. Chacun son Dylan pour les rappels: pour le Dave Matthews Band c'est "All Along The Watchtower", pour Soup c'est "Tangled..."! Mais bon, on ne va pas s'en priver: c'est très bien fait! Ce qui est vraiment appréciable, c'est la complicité qui unit Soup et son public. Leurs chansons racontent le plus souvent l'histoire d'un personnage (la soeur de Salley, Marvin Wright, la dame vaudou, Lucky...), histoire qui peut déborder avant ou après la chanson proprement dite dans de courtes séances de "storytelling", un peu comme à l'heure du conte de notre enfance. Voilà finalement pourquoi Soup est un groupe aussi séduisant: aucune prétention, un réel talent qui va s'affiner encore au fil des tournées et des albums, et surtout un enthousiasme enfantin très communicatif.
