Les Leftover Salmon (restes de saumon) définissent eux-mêmes leur musique comme du "polyethnic cajun slamgrass". C'est "presque" clair: polyethnic cajun, car ça sonne à la fois musique des îles et du bayou, bluegrass et country, voire calypso, yiddish et reggae (les proportions varient selon les chansons). Un son à la fois blanc et cajun, parce que bon: la country c'est la country, mais si vous y ajoutez une touche d'accordéon zydeco, ça commence à le faire. Encore que, ne sonne pas comme Clifton Chenier qui veut. Mais bon, c'est pas le but. Voici le premier album autoproduit du groupe, originaire du Colorado où il s'est fait un certain nom en sillonnant les festivals. On attend maintenant un tout petit peu plus de risques de la part de ces six musiciens. Bon, "Pasta on the Mountain" comme pastiche du Dead (avec guitare à la Garcia), c'est drôle, mais on avait déjà fait "Fire Up the Ganja"… Les morceaux sont bien sympa, moitié standards, moitié compos, mais pour certains, il faudrait juste voir à ne pas tomber dans la country banale. Plus sérieusement, on attend juste que le son et les compositions s'épaississent un peu, aient un peu plus de cohérence. Bref, un petit effort de production. Et ça doit être du domaine du possible, vu les talents indéniables de Vince Herman, (voix, guitares, washboard), Drew Emmitt (voix, guitare, mandoline, guitare et flute), Mark Vann (voix, guitare, banjos), Joe Jogerst (claviers et accordéon) ainsi que Rob Galloway et Michael Wooten (basse et batterie). Lâchez-vous un peu les gars!
